On December 9, 2019, the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General released its review of four FISA applications and other aspects of Crossfire Hurricane. The official PDF discusses “SSA 1” throughout. It does not type the name Pientka. That is the first fact.
Horowitz assigned SSA 1 a supervisory role on the team, Woods-file completeness duties on the Page applications, and a seat at the January 24, 2017 Flynn interview. He found instances in which factual assertions in the first Page FISA were inaccurate, incomplete, or unsupported by documentation then in the FBI’s possession. He wrote that SSA 1 “speculated” about a Steele-corroboration line. He described the August 2016 candidate briefing as used for investigative purposes. Those are inspector-general findings about a process and an unnamed slot. They are not a jury verdict.
Fox News, in a December 2019 piece, said a review of the report “leaves little doubt” SSA 1 is Joe Pientka, and that an FBI spokesperson later questioned why the name needed to be printed, citing “operational security.” That identification is reporting. The Conservative Treehouse (January 12, 2020) repeated it and added promotion/San Francisco commentary. Treat CTH’s extra claims as commentary. Do not treat an IG abbreviation as a secret confession.
